The new numbers are out from Cisco and here are the basic counts:
(Taken From: http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/ccie/certified_ccies/worldwide.html)
| Total of Worldwide CCIEs: | 20800 (last updated 12/1/2009) | |
| Total of Routing and Switching CCIEs: | 17843 | |
| Total of Security CCIEs: | 2347 | |
| Total of Service Provider CCIEs: | 1696 | |
| Total of Storage Networking CCIEs: | 149 | |
| Total of Voice CCIEs: | 1101 | |
| Total of Wireless CCIEs: | 16 |
So it looks like the actual number of R and S CCIES has gone down by a few.. Unless the last numbers were incorrect. But, the exam has changed. Also, as you know people can let their certification expire too. I am not sure why you would do that though. Could be the cost of the recert? Could be the fact that its difficult? Maybe they have moved on to (gasp) Mangement to tackle the 8th layer of the OSI model!
And any rate this is very interesting. Please comment and let us know your thoughts!
Thanks
